Rules

- FIBA (modified) rules will be used in the Annex Basketball League, with the following exceptions;
- we play two 23 minute halves, first half run time with the last 10 seconds as stop time, second half - last minute stop time if score differential is 12 points or less
- one 30 second time-out in the first half and two in the second half are permitted (unused time-outs do not carry over to the next half)
- modified FIBA rules unless otherwise stated here
- half-time is 60 seconds long
- during regular season play, in case of overtime, we play 'golden goal' (first to score wins).
- during playoffs, 1 minute stop time overtime periods will be played, until a winner is decided.
- Games will start as scheduled so long as at least 1 referee is present and each team has at least 5 players.
- If either team does not have 5 players at game time, a 15 minute default count down will start. The game clock begins at the scheduled game time. Once 15 minutes have passed, the game is declared a default (refs can not officiate a defaulted game because of liability issues). Otherwise, once both teams have 5 players, the remaining time on the clock will be played. The team that caused the late start will be assessed a technical foul.
- No jewelry is allowed to be worn during games (earring and other piercings are not permitted regardless of how old or young they are and can not be taped over) due to liability issues.
- Receiving 2 technical fouls results in a game expulsion and you must leave the gym. Failure to do so could result in Provincial sanctions against the player (not allowed to play in ANY league using certified officials in Ontario) and will stop play for the game in progress, but the game clock will continue to run if excessive delays occur.
- Being ejected from a game may result in a one game suspension, depending on the circumstances surrounding the ejection, and is up to the league conveynor's discretion. IT IS THE EXPECTATION OF THE LEAGUE THAT NO PLAYER WILL BEHAVE IN A MANNER RESULTING IN THEIR EXPULSION FROM A GAME. ORDERLY CONDUCT AND RESPECT FOR THE OFFICIALS RULING IS AT ALL TIMES EXPECTED.
- Being ejected from a game for a "hard foul" will result in an automatic 1 game suspension to be served in the week immediately following. A second ejection will result in another 1 game suspension and a meeting with the conveynor to discuss expulsion from the league, or other disciplinary actions.
- Game suspensions may also be issued, at the conveynors discretion (whether a technical foul is assessed or not), for behaviour that is deemed not conducive with the spirit of the league or it's standards.
- Refunds or credits can not be given for missed games that are for reasons beyond the control of the league (ie. players being called out of town for personal reasons or due to injury). Credits will be given if suitable replacements can be found to fill vacancies.
- Proper jerseys with numbers on the front and back are required to play, as per the officials regulations. Each player without a matching team jersey will receive a technical foul, for each game they wear the improper jersey. You will not be permitted to play without a permanent number on the front & back of the jersey.
- Playoff seating is based on the regular season records. Ties are decided by; first comparing the head to head results. If a 3 (or more) way tie exists, standings will be decided by comparing the net value of points scored for and against, amongst the teams that are tied. If still tied, the team with the fewest points against gets the better seating, if still tied the team that scored the most points gets the better seating, if still tied a coin toss will be used. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of 2 playoff games. See the 'playoffs format' page for the actual playoff format.
- A completed & signed registration / waiver form must be submitted by each player, 24 hours before their first game of the year. Otherwise they are ineligible to play.
- Teams may be transferred to different levels of the league, at the end of each season, in an effort to make each level appropriately competitive. This is at the discretion of the league conveynor.
